Dental Implants: Before, During, and After
Tooth implants have become an increasingly popular dental treatment option. However, it is vital to exercise excellent dental hygiene before, during, and after the procedure. Before receiving an implant, your teeth need to be free from plaque, decay, and periodontal disease. It is equally important to maintain your teeth in good health after the implant. At Park 56 Dental, we can help you establish a regimen which will maintain your implants in optimum condition.
Post-Surgical Care
After your implants have been fitted, you may need to follow a diet of soft foods and clear liquids for a few days. You should clean your mouth at least once a day, avoiding the site of the implant itself at first, to allow gum tissue to heal. You may need to take pain medication or antibiotics. Your dentist may also advise rinsing with salt water or with an antimicrobial mouthwash.
Brushing
You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, using a brush with soft bristles. To prevent damage to the implant, choose a non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid stain-removing brands, as well as toothpastes containing stannous fluoride, sodium fluoride, or baking soda. Small brushes designed for the gaps between teeth, known as interproximal brushes, can be very useful for cleaning around implants. Select brushes with nylon bristles, as wire bristles can damage implants.
Flossing
Floss gently, using unwaxed tape. Special floss designed for use with implants can be helpful. Your dentist may recommend using a special crisscross motion to floss implants more efficiently. Waterpik flossers can help to clean difficult-to-reach crevices and narrow gaps. The use of an alcohol-free, antimicrobial mouthwash may also help to ensure the continued health of your implants.
