Invisalign vs Traditional Braces
Are You Considering Braces?
A great smile can be a real confidence booster, so if your teeth are crooked, it can make you feel insecure and self-conscious. That is not the only reason to straighten your teeth, of course. Crooked teeth are more difficult to clean, can cause issues with your jaw alignment, and can make it hard to chew. Fortunately, we live in a time in which there are different options for straightening teeth. If you are considering orthodontia, should you pick Invisalign or traditional braces.
How Braces Work
Using a combination of metal brackets, wires, and rubber bands, traditional braces exert force on teeth, straightening them and moving them into the correct position. This gentle pressure moves teeth gradually, including moving the roots of the teeth. When you have braces, you have to see your orthodontist regularly, so that the braces can be adjusted. This keeps them working properly, moving the teeth into the desired position. Metal braces have certain advantages. They are cost-effective and efficient, and can fix even major problems with teeth.
Understanding Invisalign
The primary advantage of Invisalign is that it is not as noticeable as metal braces. Invisalign uses clear aligners, custom-made of plastic, that fit snugly over the teeth and apply consistent but gentle force to move them. To begin treatment, the orthodontist will digitally scan the teeth, and that scan will be used to create a personalized treatment plan. About every two weeks, the aligners are traded for a new set, to keep the teeth moving. In addition to being nearly invisible, these aligners are removable, so patients can eat and clean their teeth without braces in the way. However, Invisalign aligners must be worn at least 22 hours per day, and this requires some discipline.
Which is Better?
It is difficult to answer this question, because mouths are unique, and people have different needs and opinions. Many people prefer Invisalign, because it is less noticeable, requires fewer dental visits, and is easier to clean. However, some patients experience burnout with Invisalign and find it difficult to remain compliant with the requirements of wearing the trays so many hours of the day. What’s more, some dental issues cannot be fixed with Invisalign, but can be remedied with traditional braces. It is best to schedule a consultation with your dentist, to determine which option is better for you.
